About Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club

Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club was founded in 1986. In the early years it had a small membership, but over the years the club has expanded massively, especially in the Young Life Savers section.

Southbourne Surf as it is commonly referred to, is the home of group of volunteer beach life savers who are building a healthier & safer community. Our members come together and give their time freely, where they learn Lifesaving skills and compete in Life Saving Sport events.

Southbourne Surf is affiliated to Surf Life Saving GB which is the awarding body for the highest standard of Beach Lifeguard Qualification in the country, and is the National Governing Body for Life Saving Sport. There are more than 80 Surf Life Saving Clubs and 5,000 individuals who are affiliated to SLSGB, with more joining every year.

We have a Strategic Partnership with the RNLI. Our volunteers work closely with the RNLI Beach Lifeguards providing a joint Lifeguard service and beach patrol in the Southbourne/Boscombe area of Poole bay. Our club hut can be found at the bottom of St Catherine’s path near “Bistro On The Beach”, From here we patrol by foot, Inshore Rescue Boat, rescue board & surf skis.

We also provide safety cover for a number of water based events for uniform groups, schools, special need groups. We have also been involved in numerous events including marathons, triathlons events & air shows. The Surf Life Saving GB's Life Saving qualifications are recognised nationally and internationally, and are a qualification of preference for employees and volunteers of the RNLI Lifeguard Service. For more information about our qualifications visit the training section of this website.

Young Members

Our younger members are central to Surf Life Saving in the community and are the Beach Lifeguards of the future. We start training children from 7 years old in our Nipper programmes and have opportunities for all young people. For more information about this age group, please visit the Young Life Savers section of this website.

Our Youth, age 12-16, programmes offer a full range of Lifesaving and Life Saving Sport awards, and for members age 16+ we offer professional Beach Lifeguarding qualifications, leadership development camps, sports coaching and instructor qualifications.
